- Drs. Tatjana Piotrowski and Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado were awarded an NIH Challenge grant to identify genes involved in hair cell regeneration in zebrafish. Zebrafish sensory hair cells are very similar to hair cells in the inner ear of humans that enable hearing. Loss of hair cells in the inner ear leads to deafness in humans. However, in contrast to human hair cells, zebrafish hair cells regenerate. Thus, identifying genes in the zebrafish might inform us about how regeneration is regulated; why this process is blocked in humans and how this block can potentially be overcome.
